Hi Mark,
Yes, I was there and it was good to finally know you. The event was
fantastic and many topics were covered. I must say the panel I most enjoyed
was the first one, "The art and craft of music for film & tv". The input of
Christophe Beck, Samm Brown III and others was very valuable. However, all
other panels where as much as interesting and important; a composer might
know very well about harmony but if he doesn't know about the business
itself, where is his art going to end up?
The fact that first division composers aren't concerned about unionizing or
bothering too much about the business is something that I already understood
from Francis Lai, who once told me that for some composers like himself it
is difficult to get involved in business conversations with the directors
and at the same time to talk creatively about art. I know some people who
can manage it very well, they can change their hat very easily, but I must
say for me it is difficult. He said "let your agent do it for you, and if
you don't have an agent, get a lawyer".
I look forward to the second composer expo.
Roger
