[Fmpro] Jezz, can I ask a question about something other

Jezz I'm going to chime in here (shouldn't it be "Jeez"; BTW)

The fact that they're working without timecode and they have to burn it
in for you means that there is no project code, no central code
reference anyway, right? (help me out you experienced film guys).
Anytime I've gotten something from Avid editing there's code on it
automatically. They're probably editing in Final Cut, or something like
it that doesn't use code the same way--?? (again help me out here)

Therefore, any code you burn in will only be for your benefit in
spotting and logging your cues.

So, it's better if you do it yourself, you can make the window small,
and get the film into a suitable format for running with your sequencer.
For example I've used Vegas on the PC to burn timecode, and export to
.mov or .mpeg format, and compress the video so your work print that you
run in DP is smaller. You can also strip off the audio, although DP will
do this too.

Another good reason to have a video editor like Vegas is for doing demos
or mockups. Mix your music in DP and then bring it into your video
editor, put the music against the picture, then render a scene out. You
can compress the video again so the file isn't so big, then post it on
the net for approval, scene by scene.

Maybe there's a way to do this in all in Final Cut on the Mac, for those
of us without two platforms. I've found Vegas on the PC is real easy to
use, never used anything else.

Also, if they can give you a DVD format, wouldn't it be better if they
gave you a full res file on DVD ROM, not DVD, the process of burning a
DVD format is an extra step anyway. They could render it in one or two
files.

After talking to the director and editor of the film - they hated doing
a time code burn DVD because they said it took two to three hours to
render, and they lost valuable editing time. They think they can render
a Quicktime with timecode in far less time though, so we're going to try

that.

I'll know if it worked or not as soon as Fed-X gets here in the morning.

Here's something I haven't tried yet - in DP, can you start a Quicktime
movie at a particular point in a sequence? For example, if they didn't
add any pre-roll to the Quicktime, can I add measures *before* the movie

starts playing?

I'll query the MOTU list on that one...
