There was a thread on this list a few years ago on this subject. I
remember a composer in Chicago saying that the going rate was $1000
per minute. But it might be more worthwhile instead of calling an ad
agency, to call a major client or two that uses original music and
find out the deal.
Now, major clients pay a LOT when they're licensing a song. So the
licensing thing shouldn't be that big a deal. If an agency only wants
to pay $500 for a spot, then that's a small agency with small clients.
Or, it's a big agency and they know it's a buyer's market and are
negotiating accordingly.
BTW, many moons ago, I was VP Marketing/Media in the agency business.
