British Panel Recommends Against Copyright Extensions

A governmental review will soon recommend against extending copyright terms
on sound recordings in Britain, according to an early tip from the BBC.
Currently, a creative work is protected for 50 years, though labels have
recently rallied to extend the term significantly. The Gowers Review of
Intellectual Property noted that it will "reject calls from record companies
and some artists for copyright to last 95 years," though the decision is
merely a recommendation. Several groups protested the recommendation,
including the BPI and IFPI. "We have let our manufacturing industry slip
away," said IFPI chairman John Kennedy. "Will we now show the same lack of
support for our creative industries?" The official report is scheduled for
release during the first week of December.
