"In my own opinion, $100 per cue is not bad pay in
some markets, and the composer who posted this is an established composer on
his way up."
Mark you know I love ya man and everything you do for our community, but WOW
is right, $100 is totally unacceptable for anything short of compensation
for a 1 or 2 hour consultation. Maybe for some porn music that took me 1
hour to sequence a loop and bounce it to disk :p And this guy wants full on
orchestral scoring big big a la John Williams, and several versions of it.
Backend compensation deals just mean that there is either no trust or no
budget, and a studio that is putting out a prime time national tv show
without either trust or budget I want no part in. Only if it is someone I
know personally in the scene and I know it's a situation that really could
be a serious breakthrough in my career.
>From what I can see either:
A. this guy is an idiot and took a job or got placed for a job with no
compensation for a prime time network show theme, and now he got hired for
something paying and needs to find someone as dumb as him to do his dirty
work or
B. this guy got the gig, got paid and spent all his money in Vegas or on
crystal meth or something and has since has his fingers broken by the mafia
so he cant write anymore and needs a hand (no pun!)
C. this guy got the gig to write the theme for the next "Dancing With The
Stars" or whatever got paid and is a total scammer wind bag that has figured
out our pathetic scene and figures he can walk away with the budget and pay
a real composer a hundred bucks LOL does he want oral sex with that too?
I am a newb to the game and am desperate to get my music heard and played
but if I cant make at least 50 bucks an hour bare minimum for my time there
is no way I would get involved unless its truly like Hans Zimmer or Danny
Elfman or someone that just by working with them I get a major, major boost
up, or it's a person on my level that doesn't try to "hire" me but wants to
partner on something (i.e. a really talented student with a winning short)
that I have the opportunity to hear/view and decide if I want my name
associated with or not.
The sad thing is someone will jump at that fish and be labeled the next
"composer that will work for free" and will set up his career to follow
suit.
Incidentally I saw that come over the wire 2 days before FMN on Versus Media
job list (which is where all the non paid schlep jobs for students can be
found) and I was boggled to see it come over FMN, I thought the few jobs
that come from FMN were of a higher echelon, equal or better then what I get
on TAXI even. Maybe that is no longer the case?
