[Fmpro] Unions

Well put, Louis. I think Rick was quite succinct in his opinions about both
unions in general and the current AFM problems and it's part of a lively
threat I'm happy to see on the FMPRO list.
It's nice when intelligent people realize that a criticism of some aspects
of an entity doesn't mean a criticism of the entire entity. I find it
interesting when some at the PROs like to try and label me as "anti-PRO",
"anti-ASCAP', etc when I simply am objecting to the way they treat their
composer members and, on behalf of all composers, asking (some might say
demanding!) better treatment for all composers.
Likewise, to find fault with some of the AFM's policies is not anti-union,
it's actually pro-union - trying to influence change that will make an
organization better for all of its members. I believe we need to look a lot
deeper than the "unions are good " vs. "unions are bad" simplistic argument
and see how the presence of the AFM and the specific policies of the AFM are
affecting musicians and composers.
Best,
Mark Northam
