Union or non union, I most likely would NOT be hiring anyone with three
years experience at anything.
I've been a member of the AFM for close to 50 yrs and I have done dates
both union and "dark "
( off contract ) when necessary. So do the vast majority of the AFM
players I've had the pleasure of working with.
However, the On Contract dates greatly out number the dark ones ,and
using a legal triple dip for myself ( leader. Arranger, orchestrator)
have accrued a lot of re-use and pension fund payments that have made
my "retirement" years a bit more comfortable.
My point is this: If you aspire to eventually "play with the big boys"
someday, you'd better get used to dealing with union musicians and the
AFM.
AS Les mentioned, in LA ( local 47 ) things are run a bit better ( same
thing in Nashville ).
I just completed a big band CD in LA LEGALLY on a limited pressing
agreement ..and it cost me roughly $55 p/h per man .
I was quite pleased how well this accomodated my budget for the project.
