Thank you so much, James!  You've definitely given me some food for thought 
today!  I'd been bumping up my buyout fees for most things (I do a lot 
eLearning and that sort of thing) but more ad opportunities have been coming 
in of late, and I think you've given me good reason to start looking at my 
union options. :)

Not always true, Dana.  The residuals for "real" union jobs can be
substantially larger than the initial payment, and if you do a non-union
buyout, the initial fee is all you get.  A friend of mine did a minor
character VO for Burger King a few years back and made almost $.5mil in
resids.  This is the deep end of the pool, but at the shallower end, I have
a Captain Morgan silly spot running now that I got paid about $250 for the
session as a background singer (lower rate than VO) and have made almost
$3,000 in resids.

You may reduce your number of auditions/leads, but you stand to greatly
increase your income if you get a hit or two.
