[Fmpro] gigastudio4/ GVI4

Hey Chris,
First of all, the VSL also runs native on the EXS. That was the
version I used up until the Vienna Instruments came out. The EXS
version works great, doesn't take forever to load and never crashes.
Actually I can't recall ever having a crash associated with the EXS.
Everything else, but not the old steam powered EXS. I'll bet you
could get VSL or Ilio to just give you the EXS instruments as a free
crossgrade. It's the samples that are the big deal and you are a
licensed owner of them. The giga samples can be decoded and opened
easily by the EXS, so that part, though time consuming will be
relatively easy. The only hitch is that in decoding Giga samples,
it's a copy process, so you may have to copy a batch, erase a batch,
copy, erase, etc. so you don't need another terabyte of disk space.
You will also want to get Redmatica's EXSManager. If you don't use
it, the VSL stuff will take a week to load. With it, it's very snappy.

Vienna Instruments run as a separate application linked to a plugin.
The plug instantiation boots the VI engine which then links to Logic
and you're good to go. The advantage is it uses a separate VI
application and separate memory from Logic and can therefore get it's
max without having to share with Logic.

As for Giga 4...... be very careful of any *.0 application. These
programs are massively complicated and no amount of beta testing is
going to get all the bugs out. Therefore, if you're working on
commissioned projects that are going to a client, 4.1 or 4.2 would
probably be a better bet, especially since as you say, you're dealing
with a cranky company that's not in such a big hurry to make everybody
happy.

Bottom line, consider crossgrading to the EXS version first;
EXSManager is $105 and the best investment I've ever made for a Logic
utility.

Best,
James
