Movies/TV shows next?
How will composers and especially performers be compensated?

Over the summer i met an old friend at the beach. I was asking him if he'd seen some show or movie on HBO. He said no, he got rid of his cable or dish or whatever he was using. He says he only watches shows via the internet now. I, having dial up, had no clue there was enough material out there to cancel all "traditional" broadcasting connections and use the internet in its place.
Perhaps, Les's crystal ball is correct. Perhaps the internet will end up eating a chunk out of traditional viewing methods and it's just a matter of time before the "big one" hits.
I was also reading a Scientific American magazine from Feb 2000. One little "In Brief" article focoused on internet speed technology. Apparently, back in 2000, Microsoft/University of Washington was already experimenting with next generation connection speeds of 2.4 gigs per second which is the equivalent of around 150 cable channels. Lucent Technologies Bell Labs around the same time was experimenting with optical fibers capable of transmitting 37 gigabites per second.
Ironically, my buddy from the beach licensed music for a local tv commercial where he lives, and ASCAP of course, didn't care.
