I should also that, as a person that has spent some significant time as a
programmer, that a really solid application could be built in 6 months basic
and in 2 years fully flushed with all modifications to adapt to all clients,
by a small team (like 5 or 6) that could offer complete accounting software
interface on one end for ascap or whoever and a secure API on the other side
for all the online sellers to attach their reports to. Its kind of a big job
but its not complicated, just takes some time and coordination. Is ASCAP or
BMI or anyone building this kind of application?

Well its been going on for about 5 years now, kicked off by Movielink.com
which was being developed in 2000
"Movielink, LLC, a joint venture of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Paramount
Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros.
Studios. Movielink draws its content offerings from the vast libraries of
those studios as well as Walt Disney Pictures, Miramax, Artisan and others
on a non-exclusive basis."
The good thing tho that, while we arent getting paid correctly yet, is that
since its digital downloads, every EVERY bit of data that goes out from
their servers is accounted for, in the very very least even if the
developers that programmed their technology were completely asleep by the
web server logs, all of those logs are mine-able and able to suck out exact
number of downloads of each and ever piece of entertainment

http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/08/watch-downloaded-vongo-movies-on-your-tv/
How is a composer to be compensated for the free
trial?
How does the composer know which movies [and soon tv]
are downloaded?
Who keeps track of what is downloaded?
How will PRO's report to composers?
How will composers know they are being paid
accurately?
How will composers know they are to be paid etc. by
Publishers?
Without gross amount at source data on ANY statement..
how will composers know they are not being ripped off?
When US PRO's lose the performing right fight.. what
then?
Even if they win.... how will retro payment be
adjudicated?
Lack of accuracy, tracking, accountability, lack of
PRO fiduciary responsibility will effect your £$pocket
in a few short years !!
I seem to recall the following comments when the AACO
was being formed;
Amsong, 'nothing happens/changes at ASCAP unless we
say so'.
Ed Murphy's sec re inaccuracies etc., 'that's the way
we like it' [HF]
Beware.
