When I was young and stupid, I sat down and went through the ASCAP
formulas before joining and thought to myself "I can actually make a
living on my royalties"! What a dumbass I was, huh?
After fighting with ASCAP countless times to try and figure out why I
never saw any income from certain projects - a nationally televised
documentary on hurricane Hugo, for instance - or stations that pay
ASCAP, but ASCAP said "We don't survey that" (Educational
Radio/Television), I just ran out of steam to fight anymore.
I've pretty much given up. If I don't get paid what I want up front from
whomever is hiring me, I'm not expecting to *ever* see a single dime
afterwards.
To me, looks like the ASCAP "secret society" process has all but
excluded any chance of any "watchdogs" doing anything.
