Strange... what do you mean by "stays off the desktop"?  What does  
Canopus do exactly?

There are many free and inexpensive solutions for getting a dvd  
ripped to disk so you can load the content into your audio  
workstation. Suggestions:

A good commercial solution is DvdXDvd, worth the $60. http://

free solutions:

Handbrake, Handbrake lite (these are typically used to rip video for  
the iPod Video. Handbrake Lite has no options other than iPod video.)
