[Fmpro] Rights

Ok, real world question. It looks like I am about to do another
documentary that will wind up on SciFi or a similar network. The
terms briefly discussed with the director were:

1. Fixed per-minute fee, 20% discount on the up front fee if:
2. I retain my copyright ownership
3. mechanicals for dvd sales.

The director was open, but worried about what he would need when he
sells the rights to Sci Fi - if he doesn't own all the rights, will
they buy it from him?

What is it the director really needs to have? Does he have to own all
the music? If he used a library, he would not have ownership of the
music, only rights to use it. My license would not involve an
additional fee if the film sold to Sci Fi, it s a one -time fee, but
I want my 20 cents on the dollar broadcast royalties, and I think the
movie will sell well, so I would like some reasonable compensation
for DVD sales.

What is the best approach? I don't want to make it too complex and
lose the gig.

Joel
