Strange... what do you mean by "stays off the desktop"?  What does  
Canopus do exactly?

It hovers in mid air, ergo some of the complaints about it where the hover unit 
goes out and it crashes to the floor.  

Seriously though, stay away from something called Xilisoft Video Converter.  It does 
ok at converting a (noncommercial) DVD to Quicktime.  The Quicktime files are usually
a bit blurry, but at least they don't take up lots of space.  My main complaint is that there
is always a glich at the front of the QT file and i always have to ask people to put a little preroll 
on the front of the DVD to get through the glitch.  The glitch takes the form of a bit of slow motion in 
the video and some stretched out distorted audio track.  I imagine it makes the first scene longer than it 
truely is.  Plus it's like 30 bucks.
