I agree - I like Shawn and he's a very smart guy. I only wish the current
regime at ASCAP would permit him to participate publicly in lists like this
- it would be of tremendous benefit to composers.

Re: silence - I can only assume that ASCAP and its Board Members figure the
(PR) cost of staying quiet is less than the cost of revealing more details
about their activities and policies to a group that might actually ask some
genuine questions. Public accountability is something that ASCAP avoids at
all costs, sadly. We can only wonder why that is.

Make no mistake: ASCAP folks do NOT want those types of questions asked, and
they will do and say anything to avoid answering them. Can you imagine
waking up every day and having as your job the task of making sure people
don't find out about all the controversial things your company is doing?
Having to avoid justifying the indefensible? Practicing wholesale
discrimination against entire classes of people (instrumental composers) and
then trying to spin the whole thing so that people are duped into thinking
that you're trying to help them? Coming up with confusing election rules
that disenfranchise and eliminate an entire class of candidates (independent
candidates)?

Reminds me of the film "Thanks You For Smoking" - the parallels are ironic.

Best,

Mark Northam
