On that note, lets also not forget that is the only way film music was done
before the big anti-trust law suits against the big film companies in the
50s, used to be Paramount employed hourly *every* person that had anything
at all to do with the creation, production (including all the musicians
even!!), post and distribution, including owning all of its own brand movie
theaters, where they only played movies from Paramount. Same for MGM, WB,
20th Century Fox, etc etc . Now noone was getting rich in those crews and
composers were all forced to compose (really more arrange) in a specific way
using specific mediums for connotating moods desired, but each movie house
employed full time like 200+ composers, thousands and thousands of musicians
(since there was no multitracking *score* music was played live on the set
during filming)
So there was no Danny Elfmans or Hans Zimmers making millions but there were
*tons* of jobs if you had some skill with score writing.
Personally I don't need to be a millionaire again, I would be happy writing
quality film music for an upper-middle class salary and benefits, specially
since I hate doing my own biz-dev and marketing lol

This HGTV operation really sounds like the manner in which the radio
jingle syndication companies in Dallas and Memphis used to operate in
the 50s 60s : all composers on staff, ( as well as singers and
musicians in some cases )
working on a base salary with no ownership of the product, and in many
cases, no additional payment for the recording sessions they did for
the company.
Hence, the birth of the term: "jingle mill "
