Since many people write music, perhaps there needs to be some disclosure at
ASCAP about the specific rules and regulations that define who may run as a
"writer" in the election.
I suppose it's any writer member, although these days since the Board
destroyed any practical chances of independent candidates even getting on
the ballots, they pretty much control everything, as ever working in secret
to make sure that we, the members, have little or no visibility to what
they're doing and they have little or no individual accountability to the
members.
It's a sickening, pathetic legacy of a group of people who hide in their
secret board meetings and continue to demonstrate through their actions that
they will say and do anything to keep their positions and their various
perks, regardless of how objectionable their actions are.
And they justify every oppressive, unfair act with the universal excuse of
either:
1. "But it's worse at BMI since they're owned by the broadcasters,"
Or
2. "We're just trying to preserver royalties against the broadcasters and
others who want to wipe them out completely."
Yeah, fellas, that really justifies gutting the election process to keep
your jobs and perks, 20 cents on the dollar for a minute of score vs. a
minute of song on TV despite the broadcasters pay the same for both, lousy
tracking for CPA, etc etc etc. What a load of crap.
Sadly, we can only hope that some enterprising lawyer somewhere or some
enlightened judge or government person takes some interest in the kind of
prejudice and discrimination that has become the hallmark of this system and
finds a way to "inspire" the board to change its ways. The average member
doesn't stand a chance these days.
