[Fmpro] SPAM -> non PRO tech question for composers

Hmm can you do full blown symphonic pieces with that setup? I seem to use
like 80-120 different samples loaded up over my diff machines in a given
cue, which is why I have opted for multiple machine setup so I can balance
having a full string section with all the variations in vsl (like pizz,
spicatto, sustenuto, staccato, various crescendos and decrescendos, trills,
tremolos, etc) and still have punch for big brass and woodwinds and
percussion

Awesome info, thanks Chris!

Hey Chris,

I suggest moving it all to one computer. Here's how I do it:

64 bit quad core (2 dual Cores) PC. Up to 16gigs ram (only using 5gigs)

Areca raid card and 7 10K rpm Raptor drives for sample streaming.

Kontakt 2 (loads any of the kompakt sample libraries like ewqlso AND .gigs)

For your setup, think about this:

 - Make sure your mac is as fast as possible, 64bit, with 64 bit OS, and
loaded with as much ram as you can afford (of course.)

 - Get Kontakt 2

 - Get the fastest RAID setup you can afford for your samples
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816131004

 - Get as many Raptor Drives as you can afford. You can add more later:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136012

 - You may need something to hold the extra drives:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994037

So, basically, you are paying extra to soup up ONE computer instead of
spending the money on more computers. Here's the big advantage for me - no
additional latency. And you can easily bounce to disk.

I haven't needed more ram, yet because of the way the Kontakt engine works.
My only real ram hog is DFH. And lately, I've been using EZdrummer most of
the time anyway.

Hope this gives you something to consider. The days of multiple computers
and limited!

Chris

Ps - you may have to find a different raid card to go with your mac, and be
sure to check compatibility with Kontakt 2 and DP.

Hey guys and gals, Sorry for disrupting the flow of PRO discussions, but I
trust you guys to give good answers more then anyplace else. I am just
wondering, what sample software you are using?

I currently use GigaStudio 3 Orchestra over 2 dedicated PCs, Vienna
Symphonic Library full pro edition and lots of nice samples, and a 3rd pc
running cubase and a mac running digital performer, all communicating with
MIDIOverLAN. I have motu 2408 on the cubase machine, a digi001 on the mac,
and hammerfall HDSP 9652 cards on the giga machines to allow lots of adat
channels as well as several motu MTP A/Vs for my external midi gear.

Now my problem is that gigastudio, while an amazing program in itself, is
half baked in terms of stability, it only supports max 2 gigs of ram, and
tascam support seems filled with very unhelpful and cocky people that don't
listen to the problem, at least the 3 times I have tried to contact them for
support in the past it was like that. Ever since Pete Snell left tascam and
gone to work for Hans it seems that giga is falling apart at the seams.

I have been getting lots of crashes and so I upgraded one of those giga pc's
and now its just crashing when I load larger .gsp files and im getting tired
of dealing with all these problems. I need something as powerful as giga
with good support and less bugs, that will also be able to use or convert my
current collection of giga samples. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Chris
