Here's an interesting report - in England, a PRS composer can only join the
mechanical side of the society (MCPS) for representation for a musical work
if the PUBLISHER gives the writer permission! Of course, if the writer isn't
a member of a society, all the mechanicals (writers and publishers shares)
are paid to....
Wait for it.....
The PUBLISHER.
... Who may or may not distribute the writers' share of the mechanicals to
the writers, assuming the writers even know about the moneys being received
by the publisher in the first place.
Another good reason to abolish work for hire and make score a licensed-in
product just like songs.
