[Fmpro] ASCAP advance

A few years ago a friend of mine decided to leave BMI.  A former ASCAP
employee who always had their picture in Playback started shopping his
material around to get him a recording/publishing deal.  When my friend
asked if he should join ASCAP he was told "wait until I get you a deal, then
ASCAP will pay you to join their organization".  This writer does not have a
track record, nor has he had any of his songs recorded/covered by other
artists.  However according to this former ASCAP employee he could get
himself an advance or bonus (not sure which) if he had a deal in place
before signing with ASCAP.  He never got the recording/publishing deal and
so never signed with ASCAP.  At this point he's thinking of resigning with
BMI.

What could never be uncovered was how this process works for some.
