Im probably the very last of the generation that was trained in analog
recording (am 39) and tho I have not pursued audio engineering past making
my own stuff work, I remember making loops with 1/4 inch tape and pounding a
pencil into the wall and using it to push or pull on the tape to change
tempo heheh, once in a while with a cool result

How did they get tape loops to sync to the beat in those days? I know there
was that one guy (was it Mack the Knife?)who could do pretty much anything
with a razor blade and magnetic tape...
What loops offer is the ability to slice a rhythm into individual beats and
play them at any speed, which also creates imperfections that make signature
sounds you can't easily get any other way. You could probaby do that with a
razor blade too, come to think of it. Is there anything you can do with a
computer you couldn't do with tape? Change pitch without changing tempo &
vice versa? Yeah, you could do it with tape to, if you had time and
patience.
