As usual, the board member waited until after the election to resign, thus
denying the membership the right to elect a successor. This way, the ASCAP
Board handpicked who they wanted, which in this case was someone not even on
the ballot in the last election held only 10 months ago. All done in secret,
of course.
It's an outrageously non-democratic policy that smells of utter disregard
for the membership and their wishes. Why appoint a runner-up when you can
appoint a "friend of ASCAP" instead? Why even have elections, when they've
blown out the independent candidates and "choose" their own opponents via
the nominating committee. Then, when there's an opening months after the
election, they completely disregard any and all runner-ups and choose a
"friend". And to cap it all off, when everyone who runs gets re-elected time
after time, they have the gall to brag about it, after having eliminated all
the independent candidates and "chosen" weak ones as opponents that never
get elected. Sadly, the ASCAP elections have been manipulated by the Board
into more of a coronation of the incumbents.
Sounds more like a third-world dictatorship than a PRO that brags about its
democratic principals... This kind of "country club" democracy where
elections are manipulated to favor "friends" is yet another kick in the
teeth to democracy at ASCAP. We can only hope that the DOJ at some point
steps in after seeing the democratic process at ASCAP trampled time and time
again by its Board who consistently seem to desire power and secrecy far
more than accountability, transparency and democracy in the elections as
well as in other matters.
