For anyone who doesn't believe the library world is truly in a "race to the
bottom," here comes eStockMusic.com (http://www.estockmusic.com):
" Welcome to eStockMusic.com, online community for royalty free production
music. Here at eStockMusic.com we offer an extensive library of royalty free
stock music, samples and sound effects. You can search, browse and listen to
our tracks online. All our tracks are available for direct download and we
offer the best prices on the web. Only $1 a minute! Want to try our service?
Please read how it works and get started."
A careful look at the terms of use for those who license music reveals no
obligation at all to file cue sheets. In fact, the entire concept of cue
sheets isn't even mentioned. It's a cash business to these folks.
The library takes 25% of the $1 per minute license fees, and once you've
licensed a track you can use it in any and all corporate videos, film/tv
projects, or any other type of production as long as you don't resell the
track. Unlimited use, "royalty free". Composers retain all writers and
publishing royalties and copyright as it's a non-exclusive deal.
So the question is: how do composers find a way to benefit from this new
business model?
Best,
Mark Northam
