The "estates" of powerful songwriters who are deceased are among the most
powerful forces at ASCAP - they even get to vote in the elections.
Performing rights royalties pay the estate (or whoever is designated) for
the life of the copyright. As to the copyright itself, that can be willed
just like any tangible property.
