Hey Mark,
I read the article. What made your blood boil? Based on what I hear
on the radio, the Sirius/XM syndrome of fragmenting music into VERY
specific genres and playlists, it kind of rang true to me. Music has
changed a lot, and the big sweeping romantic themes would seem out of
place next to a Foo Fighters or Chilli Peppers hit, on radio at
least. Popular music has always been pretty fickle, and what's
considered "cool" changes quite a bit from generation to generation.
"I Had The Time of my Life," while nostalgic and reminiscent of it's
era, definitely has a big fat date stamp on it, and it would be hard
to imagine what kind of film would use that kind of song, unless it
was for an 80s scene.
All that genre stuff aside, I don't see any reason why if a song is
needed for a scene, it couldn't be composed as opposed to searched
for. I have no problem with songs being part of a score, or in some
cases like "The Big Chill" being the entire score. It's just a matter
of what fits and what the director/producer have for their vision.
So what didn't you like about the article?
Best,
James
