[Fmpro] PRO strategy: need advice

Regarding Scripps (a la Food Network), do the staff composers get a writer's
royalty either via a PRO or direct from Scripps? I understood that staff
composers simply get their salary as compensation for their music composing
services.

I am told by an ASCAP rep that although ASCAP does now have an agreement
with Scripps in which Scripps will pay a royalty for any ASCAP music that
airs on their network. Scripps, in practice, requires all composers to
assign the copyright of their work to Scripps. Scripps then promises they
will pay the composer the same amount of money (100% writers) as paid out to
the Publisher (100% pub). They (Scripps, the Network) have chosen to pay
themselves (Scripps, the publisher) nothing. Therefore the writer effective
gets no royalty whatsoever.

It was suggested to me that I get any and all money upfront if I compose for
the Food Network and expect zero on the back end.

If I am wrong please educate me.

I think what we mean is that Scripps does pay for the performing right, in
the form of a direct license with the composer.

Does this include Scripps?
