I left a year and a half ago. Yeah, anything done through a music
supervisor for an MTV show was done pretty much for the purposes of "free" -- that's
why they hired the music supervisor: to find indie artists who would jump on
board for nothing. If you were a library, I think you probably didn't stand much
of a chance just because there were so many libraries constantly banging on
the door to get their stuff used. But all of the major libraries (Killer Tracks,
APM, Megatrax, Pump, MasterSource) got paid for use of their music in MTVN
shows across the board. So for a music supervisor to actually say the words
"MTV doesn't pay sync and master fees" is absolutely wrong. They should've
been saying "We need gratis music for this series." It sucks that you got
screwed, but I hope the performance money added up to something respectable, at
least?

Maybe that's where belonging to a bigger library comes in handy. Even when
I worked there, working (literally) with the producers who had the power to
put my music into a show, I couldn't get stuff used. But the minute I joined
Pump, my stuff found its way into everything. Now my ASCAP statements are page
after page of MTVN shows, so the PRO money is starting to add up.

Kerry
