On the heels of this, I'm wondering if anyone on the list has done a comparison of what ASCAP's payout vs. BMI's payout is on any given cue -- perhaps you've switched societies at one point, or maybe you had a co-writer who was with the other society?? I'm really dying to know if their rates are (for the most part) comparable.?

Subject: Re: [Fmpro] BMI changes
A BMI rep I spoke to last week said this was part of an overall plan to make
the distribution system more fair, and to try and make sure it accurately
reflects the actual music performances occurring on television.
Not sure if this is part of a composer push at BMI to sign more composers by
eliminating some of the rules that so blatantly discriminate against score
music, but this change sends a message loud and clear to composers, and from
what I'm hearing, composers are listening.
Obviously this makes it much more difficult for the songwriters controlling
ASCAP to continue their "all background songs are features" policy, but
frankly, given the arrogance they're demonstrated, I suspect they're willing
to weather the storm in order to protect the songwriter's income from any
encroachment from those low-value composers... Hope I'm wrong about this!
Best,
Mark Northam
