Les,
"American printers ripping off European Pubs and international
copyright...", good analogy.
I just wanted to add that a strong organization, the American
Booksellers Association (began in Nov. 1900) was created to help
independent retail booksellers survive the European flood of published
books. Without that control over the product, the U.S. book market
would never have succeeded. Today purchasing rights of books is the
biggest part of the international book trade. Also, the death of the
independent bookstore in the past 20 years has come from complex
issues related to the artificial protection of a rather outdated ABA,
in the virtual world. Everyone wants to write or publish a
"bestseller", money rules, the quality of the written word is lessened
by this. Small presses close their doors... Our society is weakened,
therefore we are lessened.
"Control" of the product will seemingly never be in the hands of the
writer...unless something changes drastically or artificial protection
is forthcoming. Music and literature are integral components of a
free society. At least this forum gives me hope.
