Les,
The few that have live performance gigs all have front men that have day jobs or the front men are retired and collecting pension/retirement. The players that support are good but have no clue about real money and will do anything to make money. About half are college students doing their ivy league music hobby for food, wine & tips.
There is good talent but no clear idea of music community.
The local studio/tv/etc. is mostly library and the few that made a mark 20 years ago create the same tired crap for local video & radio etc. NO Los Angeles out here, just tired crap.
I have spoken with the few live cats that matter and they are really capitalistic. I gave up on this music world a long time ago, and you and fmpro have shown how the studio world really works (the same on steroids).
So, I do my solo gig and keep writing, even with the biggest bummer you can have, knowing the rest of the world has the same sorry b/s no matter what the experience. I make my own gigs, like: this week I get to play an after hours gig for Earl Klug after his concert at a local five star hotel using only my solo compositions for guitar. NO copy stuff.
Yes there are composers on the fmpro list that have resumes from here to there, with respect, but the hard work of union is just not gonna happen with the world we live in today.
Best to the union whatever happens!
