Hey Claude -
Since I license music for a living, I decided to give the calculator
a try.
I put in the following criteria:
LICENSING TYPE: TV Show Sync License
LICENSE DURATION: Unlimited [NOTE: should probably read perpetuity
instead]
MUSIC LENGTH: Entire Song
USAGE TYPE: Background or source
MEDIA TYPE: All TV Rights
HOME VIDEO RIGHTS: Included Home Video Rights
FOREIGN THEATRICAL RIGHTS: Not Included
TERRITORY: Worldwide
RESULTING CALCULATED COST: $35,250.13
The most common license terms for a TV synch license these days is
for all media excluding theatrical, worldwide, in perpetuity.
On the high side in the real world, for really well known songs,
these rights normally bring between $18,000-23,000 for 100% of the
publishing and the same for the master, for a total of $36,000-
$46,000 "all-in".
On the low side, libraries can license the same rights for around
$600 and so-called "indie music" can go for $1,000-3,000 all-in for
the same rights.
Given the calculator did not even take the master into consideration
in the questionnaire (and it's implied that it must be for publishing
only since the LICENSE TYPE is a "Sync License"), and did not factor
in the status and popularity of the song, I'm not sold on the
accuracy of the calculator......
Thanks.
