Pete, I'm so very sorry to learn of your loss. I'm sure I am telling you
nothing you don't already know when I share from experience that you will
miss him the rest of your life. My Dad was a happy-go-lucky man of simple
pleasures. When I was too young to remember or even before I was born he was
building his own stereo record players from the table up. Before this he
built large-scale mono record players that my grandfather would play on
Summer Hill farm land, and the cows would all come in to moo at the giant
speakers (I now live on Summer Hill and the farms are gone, just homes). He
was a very tall strong man. One day, while my mother was still dating him,
she was waiting on a street corner for him near the hospital where she then
worked. Two sailors in uniform approached my mom and rudely tried to pick
her up. She warned them that my dad was coming but they just laughed. My dad
did arrive and summarily kicked the shit out of the two sailors. My mom
still likes telling that story. For a year while still attending grad school
I worked as a bouncer at a local bar, but I never had any trouble from men
in uniform. - JohnB
