I just wanted to chime in here.

I use VSL, and am in the process of migrating from giga to the new Vienna
Instrument which I use as a VST plugin.  I so love the new plugin, and find
the old giga quite clunky in comparison.

If you have a good box, you can get quite a bit done with just one box.  The
older VSL giga mode definitely requires a second computer.  A second
computer however will always give you more processing power.  I am getting a
new box so that I can have more power.  However, the memory management
within the new Vienna Instrument is quite great. You don't have to freeze
the track to free up memory.  You can "learn" so that it only retains the
specific samples (i.e. notes) that it needs, so that you can still edit the
midi with only a fraction of the full RAM.  This being, VSL can work great
with a single computer.  In time as you invest you'll want more power.  The
new Vienna Instrument can also work as a stand alone on a second PC, much
the same flow as giga, in combination with it functioning as a VST plugin on
your sequencer.

For starting out, the special library sounds like a great way to go.  I am
buying the full instruments as I can to replace the old giga samples, but
would be buying the special library if I were starting today.  The special
library gives you the basic articulations for all the instruments of the
orchestra.  The quality is still great, even if you don't have all the fancy
articulations of the full blown version.

I use Sonar on a PC with a Delta 44 sound card.

I just ordered a new box and sounds from Sweetwater.  They (Jason) knows his
stuff, and can give you great advice.  They can get the new Vienna
Instruments a bit below the listed price on the VSL website.
