I love Sonar on the PC.
That said, everyone has their own favorite sequencer and platform that they
swear by. PC's are generally cheaper to maintain than Mac however

It's all about ease of use. That's why I use and recommend Pro Tools.
Some of us like to make music, while others opt to spend time reading
a book larger than the bible and deal with software that requires a rocket
science degree to use. MIDI is easy on Pro Tools. So is everything else.
Combined with the great sounds of the VSL you may be able to have
a great sounding set up and spend most of your time thinking about
creating music as opposed to figuring out how to...

Your advice is good - Sadly I'm at a tremendous disadvantage since I have no
idea how to use MIDI. It's probably easy but what I want to do is it assign
a tone of my choice to a channel and be able to play and hear that tone in
the channel - hit the record and off I go.
