For whatever it's worth (maybe not much) I have tried to
observe any discrepancies in quality between US and Brit music composed for
TV, but I have not noticed any.-JohnB

What about "Robin Hood" - season 2 is just about to start. It's a cheezy adventure show, but the music is really great with a live large orchestra. Compare the music from Robin Hood to its American counterparts, Xena Warrior Princes, Herculese, etc... (sorry if i'm misspelling these). I haven't seen either for years, but if i recall, it was mostly synthesied, and not of the compositional level of the Robin Hood score. Check out RH on BBC america coming soon!

Are there any new American shows that are using a large orchestra? I don't know - i just watch the history channel and discovery science.
