You may want to check out the music of Lenine and Zeca Baleiro. These guys
sing, but the rhythms and vocal delivery are very much influenced by Hip
Hop. In the 1990's in Northeast Brazil, there was a whole scene of
musicians that combined samba, forro, and bossa nova with hip hop, rock,
"world music." The effect of the complex Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and the
rich harmonies of bossa nova were stunning, at least to my gringo ears.

Also check out the documentary film Saudade Do Futuro, which talks about
street musicians in Sao Paulo. It does a terrific job at showing how hip
hop has given a voice for whole disenfranchised segments of society.

P.S.

On a completely unrelated not, I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I just
heard Elmer Bernstein's score for To Kill A Mockingbird for the first time.
I can't believe I've gone this long without hearing it. I am utterly blown
away. Now, I've got to go out and watch the film.
