Well that is very true, and if search engine traffic is what you are
shooting for, you definately want in the very least an HTML non flash
version of your site. There is a whole industry on Search Engine
Optimization and its extremely detailed and complex. But really a
composer website is not about search engine traffic, its a big juicy
advertisement to convince directors and producers that you are
excellent at what you do and that your idea of music and art is
aligned with the director's idea of it. (ie a director looking for a
metal sound will love the tattoo & harley style website etc)
I get about 10,000 views a month with about 1200 unique users from
search engines, not one of em that didn't search exactly for "Chris
Alpiar" or some derivative (ie someone that was looking for *me*
specifically) has contacted me and most of them are random clicks from
searches like "Cinema" or "Compost" (where in my title is Cinematic
Composer)
If I was selling a product to composers say, or to anyone, search
engine optimization would be key to my internet presence. But for us
composers I think there is very little value. A director doesn't
google "Film score composer" to find a composer for his next film ;-)
But if you are bored and just need something to chew away the time
while you wait for the next musical idea to pop in your head or for
the phone to ring, I can help point you to some excellent sources on
Search Engine Optimization!
