G'day all
It is great that there are more avenues to sell one's music. We are now in
the age of what distributor will best suit ones needs/expectations.
The best place to begin is to find out what is your expectations or goals in
the short-term and in the long-term. If as part of those goals/expectations
is the creation and marketing of CDs then work out which is the best avenue
to go. Are you looking at a small piece of the cake or just one piece of
the cake, is the cake a large one or a small one.
Some musicians are contented with having a full-time job and having music as
their hobby. Others look at the music as their only livelihood.
To others the more avenues one takes the better it suits them. Eg they will
use resources such as:
Creating CDs and selling them in both formats - Digital and Physical
Being involved in services which has opportunities which they can license
their music - ie taxi, The Orchard, etc
Being active in networking avenues such as myspace, FMPRO, taxi etc
Doing concerts/gigs and selling their music - direct contact with the
public
Doing interviews through various media options
Another thing these people will do is they research into why the successful
musicians are successful and what they do once they have reached the top and
how long they stay at the top. One musician who comes to mind is Kylie
Minogue. Kylie will always look at avenues of reinventing herself to keep
her at the top. Another person is Gina Jeffries.
At the end of the day summarising what I have said - make plans, do thorough
research. From the research does that show that you have make feasible or
unrealistic plans? If so, readjust your plans to a more realistic option in
the short-term, and also consider could they be realistic in the long-term.
If the research shows that your plans are within reach then action. Use the
avenues (which may include distributors) which fit into those plans. Music
is one of those industries which require ongoing plans and commitments.
Just a word of caution - in regards of stating negative comments about any
person or business in public that is a very "brave" or in other words a very
unwise move. If anything it makes the one who is making such comments very
vulnerable.
A couple of proverbs - What is one person's medicine can be another person's
poison. What is one person's junk can be another person's treasure.
Hope this is of assistance.

Tunecore is also good for digital distribution. CD
Baby has the advantage of handling physical CDs as
well as digital distribution. But, if you are going
all digital, I hear Tunecore's a good way to go.
The Orchard has had a bad reputation in the past. But,
they may have mended their ways. I'm don't know.
