[Fmpro] Sibelius, Mockup's and all...

Hi everyone,

what we would ultimately need is a notation program that would come
with an internal sample library containing all possible articulations
and effects like Trills, gliss, etc...The notation side of the
program would automaticly translate for example the C3 you are
holding for two measures to trig a Half-step trill going from c to c#
or a gliss from c4 to g2 etc...

Because now, in the state things are and the speed at wich we need to
present mock-ups,since you first want to convince filmmakers that
you're music is good, the sound of the mock-up is prime
consideration. So you end up with a print-out that looks like
complete jibberish, just think about the ton of lower octave notes
that we use for keyswitching who end up in your print-out. When you
keyswitch to a Marcato or muted sample, well the notation program
doesn't know. When you play timpanies using your left and right hands
separated by 4 octaves distance to have a more realistic feel...

Also the fact that string samples have slow attacks you need to
compensate by playing way in advance for your strings to be thight
with the xylophone for example. This translates into notes being
written on the 4th beat of the previous measure. I could go on and on
you get the picture.

All this means that the correction steps between creating a great
sounding mock-up and delivering a readable score to the orchestra
could get very time-consuming. I know, i made a few thousand $ last
year helping a composer friend get ready for a symphonic/rock show.
Great for me, not so great for my friend = ; o )

That's why i think the future of Notation has to go towards a very
good integration between the sound engine and the notation engine.

Hope all this was intelligible ; )

Shakespears language is a bit of a stretch for me...

Best,

Claude
