I have been composing quite a bit for libraries and indies, and have had
pieces licensed in some major releases. I am beginning to now do full scores for
indies (hopefully bigger and better). Can anyone out there give me some
pros and cons regarding the royalty differences in contracting a full score for
hire vs. licensing individual pieces. For example, if I have 4 pieces in a
film (no other composer involved) covering 20 minutes of a 70 minute film, is
there a per minute difference between licensing and a score for hire situation
via BMI, etc. (Assuming the sync and master fees for licensing equal the
scoring contract) I understand that there will likely be many other benefits to
a score (backend, soundtrack, etc.) but with a small indie, maybe even only
for credit, royalties may be the best or only income stream.
