Thanks for your kind words of encouragement! :) - and I HATE smiley faces!
I may be naive, but things do change, if enough people get together to change
them. What has NOT been in place in the past is the internet, and forums
like this. I don't think anyone has known about these percentages and their
inequity until forums like this are available. Before 1995 or even 2000 it was
probably impossible to even research this information. I've watched
organizations go from nothing to quite large and forceful lobbies, just because of
BBS's (remember those) and email.
How many composers are on this list, anyway? I do know that if a majority
of them (instrumental oriented composers) threatened to move their membership
from one PRO to another that might force that PRO to change or at least
adjusted upward their percentage to instrumental composers. One of the PROs would
have then be able to offer a HUGE advantage in wooing their competition over.
That is good old American Capitalism via competition. Gee, would you
change from BMI to ASCAP, or vice-versa if your royalties were 500% more? I think
you would. I would.
We have more available music via libraries, etc...at much lower cost, so
royalties may be much more important in the future. Instrumental music is now
similar to vocal songs, as far as availability.
PS: And I do respect Bernardtht Hermmannn! Great composser!!
