Hi y'all,
I just spoke to someone at SOCAN yesterday regarding whether I need to join
them or not since I'm anticipating airplay in Canada. He told me if that's
the case then I should contact the international department of my PRO
(ASCAP). I didn't know they had an international department. Apparently, I
must inform ASCAP I am getting airplay in Canada, or Germany or where ever
and it is up to my PRO international department to follow up etc. (Like
that's going to happen): roll eyes:
I asked if there was any oversight and he said 'no, you just have to stay on
top of it' - whatever that means??? How do I "stay on top of it" when I
have no leverage. The most important thing he said is that I don't register
with any PRO other than the one I'm with and that all PROs have
international departments for this purpose.
The general impression I get here is that us little guys don't exist so I
have little hope that anyone will perform due diligence to be sure I am paid
anything owed to me. -not sure any of this helps but I thought I'd pass it
along since I just became aware the ASCAP and all the others have an
'international' department intended to collect royalties from different
countries.
Best, Robert
