Hi Robert :
Up here in Canada, different locals have very different yearly dues.
A smaller city can be less than half the cost of Toronto.
But, IMO, you've got to know what the union will do for you.
As a composer, why is it worth joining ?
As a performer, why is it worth joing ?
Or, are you going to be a signatory to the AFofM agreements ? Why ?
Are you doing music for advertising/radio and tv ?
Residuals on performances ? Contracts ? Pension ? etc...
In Canada there is a different union in Quebec, the UDA, which charges
different rates, different reps, residuals, pension, etc... for one company
I dealt with (for a bilingual product) it was a major PITA and they didn't
want anything to do with any unions from then on.
