Hi David!
Thanks for the advice and opinion. It's a jungle out there, as you well
know. I'm at a point where having some legal advice regarding career
decisions would be helpful; all in good time I guess. I hear Toronto is
gorgeous - someday I'll have to visit, especially since I was thinking of
moving there about a year ago :)

Up here in Canada, different locals have very different yearly dues.
A smaller city can be less than half the cost of Toronto.
But, IMO, you've got to know what the union will do for you.
As a composer, why is it worth joining ?
As a performer, why is it worth joing ?
Or, are you going to be a signatory to the AFofM agreements ? Why ?
Are you doing music for advertising/radio and tv ?
Residuals on performances ? Contracts ? Pension ? etc...
