Thanks for the info.     I am familiar with the 500% issue of instrumental 
vs. background.   It is outrageous.   As far as cue length, it sounds like there 
is no minimum size.   My concern is for a part of an underscore that might be 
very sparse, say 3 notes within 10 seconds, and those 3 notes are 4 seconds 
after another cue and say, 10 seconds before the next.   Is it a cue, or part 
of another?   

If you are writing for real instruments, it is fairly clear.   You have a 
session, and tape starts and ends.   That would pretty much help define a cue.   
But, I can see as technology makes it very easy for composers to directly 
create and mix music accurately against the film, there could be a scenario of a 
very sparse score throughout an entire film (a few notes every 10 seconds, 
consistently), and it could get very difficult to determine the length of any cue. 
  Anyway, I will add up the music the best I can and pray to the PRO gods for 
mercy.
