Is he expanding musical vocabulary?
what "musical vocabulary" and why is it important and why is it important
that it be expanded?
John Williams is generally hired to do a job (i.e.: create music which
supports the motion picture for which it was composed; if he failed at that he
wouldn't be hired by the most respected filmmakers in the business) denigrating
him says more about the commentator than it does about Williams.
I have only one criterion for music: do I like it? In Williams case, the
only piece of his that I did not like was his Violin Concerto. Otherwise, I
have enjoyed his music since 1965 ("The Reluctant Stowaway" episode of LOST IN
SPACE first shown Sept., 1965).
Just my take.
