[Fmpro] ...standard rates

Hi All -
With some of our Film Music JobWire job postings, the job poster is very
specific about what they want. With others, they have a "general idea" - we
always try and push them - the "general idea" ones - to get more details,
either by asking if they have any temp music already or anticipated, asking
if they "listened to" any music while they were shooting the film, etc.
Sometimes this yields results in a better-defiined posting, other times the
filmmaker is actually looking to be inspired by a composer's music to help
zero in on what he wants, as is the case in this situation.
As to "standard rates", I assume he is referring to rates paid by other
documentary filmmakers that he knows. True, there are no "standards" given
the big picture of things - it's all experience-based usually, within the
confines of what the filmmaker has or hasn't budgeted. Given how many "free
music" incoming jobwire requests we turn down on a regular basis, it's great
to see that at least the docu filmmaker community isn't pursuing the "work
for free" idea that so many indie filmmakers are these days.
Best,
Mark Northam

I really do wonder about some of these postings. This one is all over
the map :
"Composer should be comfortable in a variety of genres and musical styles,
both classical and contemporary, acoustic and electronic. While the
documentary is set in NYC's South Bronx, we are definitely not aiming for
a hip-hop, gangsta-rap feel to the scores"...O-kee-do-kee...so, what kind of
demo should I be sending ?
but, as usual, what they are willing to pay is cloaked in that phrase that
you
have quoted below...
Whatever, I'll get right on it.
