John, check out Turandot from Puccini.
I guarantee you you will cry before it's over.
Not of boredom, not of dissatisfaction, but out of
pure joy for music. I started with a lot of Mozart's operas
and conducted most of it's overtures at Juilliard, they are
also works to be praised. Check out Idomeneo and
La Nozze di Figaro (The marriage of Figaro) as well as
"The abduction from the Seraglio"

This is all landmark music making at it's best.
The origins of everything else.

When I first heard Madama Buterfly
(it must have been almost 20 years ago) I started felling
pure joy for Puccini's music, being Turandot the icyng on the cake...

The version with Pavarotti singing in particular is absolutely
splendid.

I see Opera like a drug. It might take you a while and
a bit of acquired taste in order to get into it, but once you
get to like it, you will never leave. Guaranteed.
