[Fmpro] Dumpster diving

I lived in a rat and roach infested basement apartment in NJ while going to
Juilliard - don't know if that qualifies. The rent in 1973 was $60 per
month, about all I could afford. Now when I say infested I really do MEAN
infested. How about waking up in the morning to go to the bathroom and
finding a dead rat in the toilet? I believe the critters enjoyed hearing me
endlessly practicing or composing. It didn't seem to keep them away at any
rate. At one point the super of the building along with two other guys and
myself staged a raiding party on the rats who had taken over most of the
rest of the basement which is where the trash for all the apartments was
stowed. We entered armed with metal pipes and brooms and other such
weaponry. The rats scrambled for their life. There must have been at least
a hundred of them. After that initial battle pest control was finally
called in and the problem was managed but for a while it was pretty icky
living there. That's as close to indigence as I've been. I did live in my
car for a couple of days when I was sixteen and ran away from home,
expecting to get from Miami to New York on $40. Didn't quite make it and
had to borrow money and sell a typewriter. After I got to NY I ditched my
car and went back home. Smartest thing I ever did.
